CASTLECRAG

This inspired design by Svalbe &Co represents stage 1 of a complete property makeover requiring the sympathetic integration of large natural sandstone outcrops on a steep slope falling away from a very high traffic main road. The challenges of setting retaining walls into the upper slopes and logistics of earthworks, materials delivery and handling required refined project management and traffic control skills.

The team stepped up to the challenge and transformed a once mundane façade with remarkably diverse elements including a dynamically curved brick letterbox feature which both complements and offsets the boxy nature of the brick home. This leads to an integrated garden walk experience with natural stone gabion retaining, again complementing the natural sandstone outcrops along with stairs of Endicott hand chipped stone, boulder clusters, bluestone steppers and specially fabricated steel handrails.

Further pathways, stairs and planter beds by the entrance of the home, along with substantial planting throughout, irrigation, lighting and corten steel edging to subtly tie the whole project together, results in a respectfully sensitive, yet dynamic enhancement breathing new life into strong old bones.
