CASTLECRAG STAGE II
After completing the front yard 18 months ago, it was time for a complete reconstruction of the side and rear areas, including a new studio and the iconic sculptural, structural, storage, planter named “THE BLADE”.
Works began with demolition of the old, collapsing garage then extensive earthworks and retaining to level the rear yard making it a functional, well drained “room” of fine proportions.
The new studio is faced with brickwork to match the house styling and contains an open living space with a simple powder room. The epoxy finished floor is fitted with a fully automated infloor heating system, along with all the bell’s and whistles including an EV charging point.
Longma bifold doors open onto to Blackbutt hardwood decking to create
a sequence of integrated, flowing indoor/outdoor “rooms”.
“The Blade” is truly unique – a finely integrated long, narrow, tall structural and sculptural element that provides for feature, storage and planting. Running from the front yard retaining wall, right through to the studio, the robust steel skeleton provides for bin enclosures, storage bays and the support necessary for a 1m wide by 300mm deep planter box atop. All this neatly concealed by VJ cladding board and magnetic push latch doors for a seamless exterior. It also conceals carefully designed drainage, plumbing and electrical works to ensure any surface water from the driveway is channeled safely away from all structures.
Existing rear decking, balustrade and screening has been extended and linked by 2 sets of stairs leading to an Endicott pathway and studio steps. The rear yard is retained with sandstone filled Gabions, finished with Corten steel to match the front yard retaining. Bluestone steppers between the Blade and decking provides further integrated linkage with the front yard styling. Finally, turfing, planting and a Hunter irrigation system ensures the whole ecosystem is self sustaining – providing Emma and Fraser with the low maintenance haven they had always dreamt about.
